Obituary for Bryon F. Kurtz, "Fred"

Bryon Fredrick Kurtz, age 57, of Tomah, Wisconsin, passed away peacefully, with his daughters by his side, on Monday, June 10, 2019, at Cranberry Court Assisted living in Tomah.

Bryon, better known as Fred was born June 18, 1961, in Beaver Dam, WI, to Robert and Joan (Rueth) Kurtz. He grew up in the Warrens and Millston area where he made many lifelong friends that quickly turned into family. Fred spent much of his time with family and friends, he always knew how to have a good time. He spent many days traveling alongside his father (Robert Roof) in his semi-truck traveling the country. He spoke about these times often and they were cherished memories to him.

For most of Bryon’s career, he did construction and drywall for a family business. In his free time, he enjoyed playing pool, listening to rock n’ roll, watching westerns, and shootin’ the shit with his family and friends. His lighthearted, easy going, friendly, and happy personality always made him the life of the party. Fred was always known as the “instigator” in the family, he enjoyed playing jokes on the ones he loved. He has passed this trait onto his beloved nephew, Cory Kurtz, allowing his mischievous ways to live on through him.

He was an avid outdoorsman who loved spending time hunting and fishing. If it was sunny, you could almost assume Fred would be out fishing down by the dam. Fred also enjoyed searching for antiques, he could always see the possibilities in things that others overlooked. He enjoyed tinkering with things to bring them back to life. He had a love for old muscle cars and enjoyed going to car shows with his friends. He lived life to the fullest and loved to enjoy a nice cold one or maybe even two… He would never pass up an opportunity for a good ride on a Harley or a back-road cruise to enjoy the countryside.

More than anything in life, Fred enjoyed watching his three beautiful daughters grow and create families of their own. Bryon was able to watch many of their successes and was a great support for them during difficult times. In the most recent years, he spent countless days with his grandchildren who were very dear to his heart.

Fred is survived by his daughters, Kristy (Kyle Aschenbrenner) Kurtz of Weatherford, Oklahoma, Rebecca Kurtz of Tomah, and Jessica (Neil Baumgarten) Kurtz of Appleton, WI; mother, Joan Roof of Tomah; father; Robert Kurtz: five grandchildren, Kingston, Donovan, Khloe, Dayton and Nolan; siblings, Timothy, Joseph and Jill Roof, John (Patricia) Kurtz, Sondra Cornell, Cynthia (Brian) Menard, Carrie Kurtz-Lagerman, and Kevin Kurtz; mother of his children, Karen Lee of Tomah, WI; along with many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his father, Robert Roof; brother, Stephen Roof, great niece Sophie Kurtz, and his beloved Cocker Spaniel, Nikki.

Memorial services will be held Thursday, June 13, 2019, 11:00 a.m. at the Torkelson Funeral Home in Tomah, WI. Pastor Bob Streeter will officiate. Burial will follow in the Millston Cemetery, Millston, WI. Family and friends are invited for visitation Thursday, 10:00 a.m. until the time of service at the funeral home.
